Canes and walkers are used to assist walking in those who suffer from medical conditions such as arthritis, or who have undergone surgery and need assistance walking during their recovery. Other medical walking aids, such as crutches, are also used during the recovery period or for long-term walking assistance.
Crutches are used in a way that is similar to canes, except there is additional supports that are typically placed under the arms. Your hands should grip near the center of the crutch, and movement is achieved by putting the pressure from walking onto the crutch rather that the injured or painful part of the legs.
There are various sizes and types of crutches available for purchase, including
bariatric crutches. Bariatric crutches are able to support up to 550 pounds, and are available in sizes from junior to tall. Invacare crutches are available from sizes for children to adults up to 6'6" tall. You may find
forearm crutches are easier to use, especially if your injury or illness makes walking possible. Forearm crutches feature a wide band that is placed around the forearm, and hand grips on the inside of the crutch.
Canes are commonly used as a walking aid for those who have mild to moderate injury or illness that affects your walking ability. If you need to buy a walking aid, be sure to try it out to ensure proper length and weight for your ability. The walking aid should reach the wrist area easily, and be lightweight. A
quad cane offers the additional support you need for mobility. You can buy quad canes that feature a small, medium or large base. Bariatric quad canes are also available and support up to 700 pounds.
Walkers are typically for those who have moderate to severe limited mobility, and are available to buy in a wide variety of designs. There are also many walker accessories available, such as
walker trays,
wheels and
baskets. These accessories help keep your walker rolling smoothly, as the baskets and trays free your hands for easier movement.
Your accessories can be purchased to fit the particular brand of medical walker you own. Portable walkers, such as
Guardian walkers, are easy to fold and maneuver through narrow places, and are easy to carry and store. These walkers support up to 300 pounds, but the Guardian and Invacare bariatric walkers can support up to 400 pounds. You can also find children's walkers, which are easy to use and store. You can buy children's walkers that support the whole body, or only the anterior or posterior. You can also find accessories similar to adult walker accessories, such as baskets and trays.
